Brief Introduction

5-HTP Powder is an amino acid. It can be used as a precursor of serotonin (serotonin, 5-HT) in the human body (and then as a precursor of melatonin). Several double-blind studies have shown that 5-HTP can increase brain serotonin concentrations, improve depression and promote melatonin formation, improve sleep quality, and suppress appetite, but these studies are questionable. Therefore, more studies are still needed to confirm whether 5-HTP has these physiological effects. Ghana seeds are rich in 5-hydroxytryptophan, which is currently the main natural source of 5-HTP.

5-HTP Powder is classified as a pharmaceutical ingredient in some countries. In the US, UK and Canada, 5-HTP is marketed as a dietary supplement (health supplement).

5-Hydroxytryptophan is an organic compound with the molecular formula C11H12N2O3, an amino acid that acts as a precursor to serotonin in the human body, and is therefore thought to help increase serotonin levels.

Physiological effect

Taking 5-HTP can be converted into serotonin in the body, but serotonin cannot enter the brain through the blood-brain barrier. Therefore, 5-HTP must first pass through the blood-brain barrier, and then be converted into serotonin in the brain to be truly stable. The effect of mood and promoting sleep quality, after oral administration of 5-HTP, only about one-third to one-half can be converted into serotonin in the brain, and a large part will be converted before entering the blood circulation of the brain into serotonin, this part is not a positive physiological effect.

Several studies have pointed out that 5-HTP has certain physiological effects. According to clinical research, taking 5-HTP can significantly improve the mood of patients with depression. In addition, 5-HTP can also promote sleep quality and improve mild insomnia. In addition, there is also clinical research evidence that 5-HTP has analgesic effect, can improve the discomfort of some patients with fibromyalgia, and also has an effect on the improvement of chronic pressure headache. The frequency of seizures decreases, and the concentration of enkephalins in the body is increased. Enkephalins are pain-relieving and happy substances secreted by the human body. The concentration of enkephalins increases, which can make the human body feel comfortable and happy. Animal experiments have also found that 5-HTP can increase the blood concentration of leptin, improve appetite control, and avoid overeating. A clinical study on 19 obese women found that taking 8 mg per kilogram of body weight per day (mg) of 5-HTP for five weeks, without dietary prescription, resulted in an average weight loss of 5%, similar results were seen in other longer duration and non-insulin dependent diabetes patients According to clinical research reports, 5-HTP can indeed be used as an aid for appetite control in obese people. However, it is worth noting that the strength of these evidences is still insufficient, and the physiological role of 5-HTP remains controversial.

As 5-HTP research is not thorough enough, possible side effects and drug cross-effects are not very clear. However, since there are no reports of serious adverse reactions at present, it can be considered that 5-HTP will not produce serious adverse reactions at a certain dose. On the other hand, diarrhea and vomiting are the more common adverse effects due to the rapid formation of serotonin in the upper intestinal tract. It has been reported that 5-HTP can cause eosinophilic myalgia syndrome (EMS) and is more severe, resulting in extreme muscle tenderness, myalgia, and blood abnormalities. However, there is evidence that EMS is caused by contaminants in 5-HTP supplements. In addition, the drug cross-actions that have been reported so far are as follows:

When co-administered with monoamine oxidase inhibitors or SSRI antidepressants, 5-HTP can cause acute serotonin syndrome.

When combined with carbidopa (as used in the symptomatic treatment of Parkinson's disease), 5-HTP tends to cause nausea and vomiting; however, this can be relieved by taking granisetron.

5-HTP is a naturally occurring amino acid in the body and is commonly sold as a nutritional supplement. 5-HTP (supplements) are increasingly used due to their possible sleep-promoting and obesity-treatment properties. Is 5-HTP really so magical? What are its possible benefits and potential side effects? How should we position it?

What is 5-HTP?

5-HTP is a natural amino acid in the human body and is also the chemical precursor of serotonin.

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that helps make chemicals that make us feel good. The human body produces serotonin through the following pathways: tryptophan → 5-HTP → serotonin.

5-HTP is found in very small amounts in food. Typically, manufacturers use the seeds of Griffonia simplicifolia (an African plant) to produce 5-HTP nutritional supplements. Some people believe that taking 5-HTP can increase the amount of serotonin in the body, and that serotonin deficiency has been linked to a number of diseases, such as depression. For this reason, some doctors recommend taking 5-HTP with regular medications in some cases.

Function

5-HTP Powder is commonly sold as an herbal supplement. Based on known animal and human experiments, 5-HTP may have the following health benefits:

1. Promote sleep, improve sleep quality and prolong sleep time;

2. Treat arousal disorders such as sleep terrors and sleepwalking;

3. Treat and prevent obesity (reduce cravings for unhealthy foods and increase satiety);

4. Treat depression;

5. Relieve anxiety;

6. Treat fibromyalgia, myoclonus, migraine and cerebellar ataxia.

Disadvantages of 5-HTP as a supplement and drug

5-HTP has a short half-life (1.5-2 hours), which limits its therapeutic potential (fast in and out). Research from Duke University in the United States has shown that the use of sustained-release forms of 5-HTP supplements/drugs can significantly improve its safety, stabilize 5-HTP exposure to plasma, and enhance brain serotonin function.

5-HTP usage

5-HTP is used in doses ranging from 20-3250 mg/day. In the treatment of depression, 5-HTP is most commonly used in doses of 200-300 mg/day in 3-4 divided doses.

For ordinary people, the common usage (dose) of 5-HTP is: 25mg/day for the first week, then increase the dose once a week until it increases to 50-100mg/day. Read product labels carefully before using 5-HTP supplements.
